The Importance and Relevance of Data
As the Data Coach at Bowser Elementary School I thought it would be useful to explain why data is important, and how it is being used at our school.
We have always collected data; primarily information about test results that is collected on a database to assess how well a student is doing in a specific subject or area. With the increasing number of tests students are required to take, the volume of information is always growing. So why do we do this, and how can it help individual students and teachers?
It helps teachers identify strengths and weaknesses in their students, and differentiate instruction by targeting areas where they need more help. There are many data tools available to do this. As many of our tests are now online, the teacher has access not just to final scores on a test, but specific questions and types of questions. There are reports that identify growth targets, monitor progress, and recommend specific skills.
In the Links I have attached several of the websites we use so that you can see the abundance of data there is for teachers. In faculty and grade level meetings we get together and discuss how to utlize the variety of reports available.
If you have any questions I can be reached in the Literacy Office, and my extension on the school phone system is 54011.
